Magic Txns: Decent x Ziggy Ziggy Music
Bringing gas-free collection and seamless web3 onboarding to new communities.
Decentralization provides a unique opportunity for creators to take control of the content they build and create communities driven by real connection. NFTs have been used to facilitate these connections, linking creators and collectors through verifiable tokens of their digital identity.
Since their inception, NFTs have largely been seen and used as financial assets; an Ape, a Snoop track, a meme coin with value based on hype and speculative value. We think they can achieve so much more, and so does MusicBen, founder of web3 music publication Ziggy Ziggy Music.
“I used to think of NFTs purely as a financial ‘thing’ with floor prices or ultra-exclusive memberships,” says Ben. “Then last year one of my favourite artists in web3, Annika Rose, dropped into my DMs and offered me a free NFT. ‘It’s a thank you,’ she said, for showing up to one of her Twitter Spaces. This small interaction totally changed the way I thought about web3 and NFTs.”
Inspired by Annika, Mint podcast host Adam Levy, and other web3 creators tapping into NFTs as top-of-funnel assets, Ben wanted to bring something similar to Ziggy - and reached out to Decent to make it a reality.
“I noticed the team at Decent were always pushing new use-cases for creators beyond simple NFT drops, so I reached out to see if they could help. They ended up going way beyond the spec and delivering something I didn’t even know was possible.”
The vision was simple: Ben aimed to gift a commemorative NFT to early supporters of Ziggy, while also incentivizing community growth and deeper relationships.
“No expectations, trading or speculations… just thanks for being here,” he noted.
Accessibility is key for onboarding in web3 for both new crypto-friendly readers and brand new entrants, and we wanted to make this drop as seamless as possible for Ben’s community to participate and engage regardless of where they are in their web3 journey.
The result? Magic Transactions, a gas-free claim mechanism that takes the complication and expense out of token engagement.
Where’s the Magic?
Magic Transactions was built to achieve 3 goals:
Abstract gas fees from the claim process
Grow Ziggy’s email CRM
Prevent bots and backend claim mechanisms
To do this, we tapped into Polygon’s low-cost transaction capabilities and combined Privy’s wallet connection/email verification modal with prescriptive contract functions to safeguard against illegitimate claims.
When they reach the claim page, the Ziggy community is prompted to connect their existing wallet or, if they don’t have one, create an embedded wallet through Privy by logging in with their email. Once connected, collectors entered and verified their email with a unique code to prove legitimacy and be eligible to claim the free, gas-less NFT!
On the back-end, Magic Transactions assigns the mint/airdrops commands to the contract creator and, technically, leaves the contract inactive during airdrops to force email entry and prevent workarounds.
The Future is Decent, Powered by NFTs
With this build and others like it, we view Magic Transactions as the perfect Trojan horse to seamlessly onboard the next millions to their first wallets in web3 through L2 infrastructure. This flow is only possible on high throughput (re: L2) chains as the creator must sponsor gas fees; deployment on Ethereum might have cost Ben thousands, whereas on Polygon and similar L2s, transactions push through for much less.
Magic Transactions also enables community members at every stage of their web3 journey to participate through email wallet creation and gas-free claims, and rewards them for their engagement with a unique identifier that they can use to participate in the community further down the line.
“I envision Ziggy Ziggy as a global brand that reaches way beyond the current crypto-native audience so building these features now is an essential part of onboarding them in the future,” says Ben. “My dream is that this is the first step to a deeper community, not just an audience. And in the future I’ll know exactly who was here from day one, and maybe they can be rewarded in some way.”
