At Decent, we’re equipping web3 builders with the tools they need to deploy applications that create real, fundamental value. As our own NFT protocol has grown to become one of the largest by transaction volume and unique users, we’ve had a front-row seat in witnessing the growth of L2’s themselves, and it’s clear to us that the next wave of applications will be built on these chains. To that end, we’ve been working hard to make it easy for both builders and users to take advantage of these scaling innovations.
While the industry’s building blocks allow for unlimited possibilities in creating ever more complicated designs, we’re taking a less-is-more approach to increase simplicity in this complex world. Instead of adding more primitives to an already cumbersome user experience, we’re focused on removing hurdles, streamlining steps, and closing the gaps between users and the things they want.
That’s why we’re especially excited to announce The Box, the latest release in our holistic web3 toolkit, built to unleash new levels of ease for creators and developers alike.
Why Now?
While L2 blockchains are categorically cheaper, faster, and more scalable than Ethereum, web3 communities have been hesitant to embrace them due to clunky user interfaces, fragmented liquidity, and tedious bridging/swapping user experiences. In a survey of hundreds of users, more than 80% noted that they will leave a NFT purchase if they have an insufficient token balance to complete the sale. That’s a LOT of transactions left on the table.
While L2’s alone aren’t a universal remedy for all problems that plague Ethereum, they introduce different problems, which we deem to be addressable. As more chains are utilized for activity, liquidity fragments; also, as addressed earlier, the user journey for bridging and swapping tokens to date has been a nightmare. The Box plays clean up to both these problems - addressing fragmented liquidity with cross-chain transactions and cutting out the horrible bridge & swap journey.
What's in The Box?
The Box enables one-click checkout for any NFT, with any token, across multiple chains and both primary and secondary sales. The Box meets collectors at their point of liquidity, enabling them to spend tokens seamlessly across chains. It does this by handling token swapping, bridging, and secondary purchases on the back end, abstracting away these otherwise multi-step processes for the user. Instead of making users jump through hoops to get the digital assets they want, The Box helps serve them up with a single click.
So Long, “Sold Out”
The Box is more than just a simple primary checkout modal; it also handles secondary market listings. If an NFT project sells out, The Box automatically sources the best buy/sell price from all secondary marketplaces. This feature not only ensures that users can purchase NFTs even after a primary sale concludes, but also allows creators and developers to serve their audiences right where they are, without having to send them off to secondary platforms or third-party vendors.
It is not interesting that an NFT exists and is collectible. It is interesting how ownership of this asset facilitates a broader application or community. Collecting NFTs requires context; how does a collector’s understanding of the application drive purchasing intent? This type of collecting needs to occur within the application; not on aggregated third-party marketplaces that paint colorful communities shades of gray.
Designed to Delight Devs
As developers, we know how difficult it can be on the back end to make things easy for the user on the front end. In everything we build at Decent, we strive to provide our fellow developers with that same level of simplicity, and The Box is no exception. Developers will be able to import The Box as a single React component, easily swap it in for an existing transaction button, and customize it with just a few tweaks. With Decent’s dev-friendly docs, The Box can get up and running and ready to launch NFT projects in no time at all—no helper functions required. The open-to-all SDK will be live soon, post-beta testing.
Unboxing the Future Together
The Box provides the critical infrastructure needed to realize the promise of a multi-chain future. App chains and rollups promise user experiences capable of onboarding mainstream audiences, but they cannot thrive if each new chain further fractures liquidity. The Box makes web3 more accessible and user-friendly for everyone by meeting users at their point of liquidity, enabling previously chain-scoped funds to be used seamlessly across chains. By abstracting bridging and swapping, The Box makes rollups as user-friendly as Ethereum, eliminating deterrents from deploying to these chains. We believe the Box is poised to change the way we think about NFTs and the blockchain economy at large, and we’re incredibly excited to see the innovations that bloom from these new design spaces.
What’s Ahead
We’re excited to bring this beta version of The Box to Decent and interested applicants on our waitlist and build in public with you all. If there’s one thing we live by, it’s “just keep building.”
We’re hard at work to bring the full version of The Box to the masses with an open-source SDK in the coming weeks. Already on our radar, The Box V2 will introduce new use cases across DeFi applications in the near future, and we’re designing better transaction tracing tools specifically for cross-chain transactions.
